CISIM is Pisa University’s research centre for Materials Science and Engineering. The centre fosters collaborative, interdisciplinary research and education in the science and engineering of natural and synthetic materials among Pisa University departments, and other universities as well as public and private research institutes and industrial partners.
CISIM currently supports the two-year masters course in Materials and Nanotechnology offered by the University of Pisa in collaboration with Scuola Normale Superiore. These aim to train graduates with physics, chemistry, electrical and industrial engineering and other science backgrounds with an interdisciplinary approach, equipping them to begin a PhD or an industrial career in materials and nanotechnology-related research. They are run through a collaboration between the departments of Information and Communication Technology, Civil and Industrial Engineering, Physics, Chemistry and Applied Chemistry, but are taught with participation from SNS staff and use NEST facilites for training and project work.
Key resources of CISIM are the Laboratory for Electron Microscopy and Microanalysis (LEMM), equipped with a state-of-the-art environmental field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) run by CISIM, as well as a wide range of advanced characterization instruments, distributed across Pisa University, and organized in the CISIM Network Facilities, both available for research and technical investigations to Pisa University staff, researchers from other national and international research institutions and industry.
